Google Ads invoices and VAT — why no tax is shown on them

By Mohammad Danyal Shahzad · Updated on

Google Ads invoices often show no VAT because the account is served by Google Ireland Ltd. Google tells you to check with your own tax authority whether you must self-assess the tax, and says plainly that it cannot advise on tax matters. The documents sit inside the account under Billing → Documents — they are not posted or emailed to you.

A familiar bookkeeping moment: the Google Ads invoice is there, no VAT is shown on it, and searching for a "tax invoice with VAT" sends you round in circles through forums. This guide gathers what Google itself documents, and says clearly where our competence ends.

Up front: we are a marketing agency, not tax advisers. This page reports Google's documentation and is not a substitute for professional tax advice. Your own accountant or tax authority decides how this is treated — which is exactly where Google points you too.

Why there is no VAT on the invoice

It starts with which entity is billing you: "Your account is served by Google Ireland Ltd., but Google can't charge VAT if your billing address is in a country that's not part of the European Union." (Google Ads Help)

Google does not then tell you what to do about it — it hands the question on: "Check with your local tax authority to know if you're required to self-assess VAT in your country." (Google Ads Help)

And on its own role, unambiguously: "Google can't advise you on tax matters. Contact your tax adviser for any questions about this tax." (Google Ads Help)

If an agency gives you a definitive ruling at this point, be sceptical — neither Google nor we will.

Which documents you actually get

Not every country gets the same paperwork. For yours, Google describes it like this: "In your country, Google provides Statements on a monthly basis. These documents represent a summary of billing activity for the time period stated on them." (Google Ads Help)

If you are waiting for something to arrive, you will wait a long time: "In most countries, Google Ads doesn't mail or email certain documents such as local tax invoices, statements, or payment receipts." (Google Ads Help)

There is one exception, tied to the payment setting: "Unless you're on the monthly invoicing (credit terms) payment setting, Google doesn't mail or email statements for automatic or manual payments." (Google Ads Help)

Where the documents live

Inside the account, not in your inbox: "Go to Documents within the Billing menu" (Google Ads Help).

What you needWhere

Payment receiptsBilling → Documents
Documents delivered by emailOnly on monthly invoicing (credit terms)

Whoever handles this needs at least the Billing access level — see access levels and ownership.

Three questions for your accountant

Instead of half-answers from forums, take these into the conversation:

  1. How should services from Google Ireland Ltd. be treated in our VAT return?
  2. Is our VAT ID correctly recorded in the Google payment profile, and does it match our registered name?
  3. Which of the documents Google provides are sufficient as an accounting record?

What this means for your agency invoice

Two separate amounts, two separate invoices: the ad budget goes to Google, the management fee to the agency. With us the budget runs through your own ad account with no markup, and the fee is published openly on the pricing section. An agency that bills budget and fee as one lump sum makes your tax treatment harder than it needs to be; how to spot that is in the agency red-flags guide and the agency pricing guide.
